Obituary

The family of Robert Mitsuo Yamashita of Tacoma, Washington, is saddened to announce his passing on July 10, 2026, at the age of 90.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Michie; his daughters, Ruth (Mike) and Heidi; his granddaughters, Kelly and Laura; his brothers, Al (Sno), Don; dear friend Carmen; many nieces, and nephews.

Bob was born on November 9, 1935, in San Jose, California, to Harry and Keiko Yamashita, the second of three sons. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University, a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University, and a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary.

In July 1959, Bob married Michie Doi. Together they made their home in Tacoma, Washington, where he served as pastor of Whitney United Methodist Church from 1962 to 1968. Throughout his life and ministry, Bob embodied Christ's love through humble service, compassionate leadership, and a generous heart. He faithfully answered God's call wherever he was led, leaving a lasting impact on the churches, communities, and countless individuals he served.

In 1968, Bob became Executive Director of Tacoma Community House, serving in that role until his retirement in 1995. His visionary leadership helped transform Tacoma Community House into a nationally respected organization serving immigrants, refugees, and members of the South Sound community. During his tenure, he championed the successful resettlement of thousands of Southeast Asian refugees fleeing war while expanding education, employment, English language, and immigration services to meet the evolving needs of the region. His unwavering commitment to equity, dignity, and opportunity changed countless lives and helped establish Tacoma as a welcoming community for newcomers.

Bob's legacy lives on in the thousands of individuals and families who found hope, belonging, and new beginnings through Tacoma Community House and through his extraordinary leadership and compassion.

Above all, Bob cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured time spent with those he loved. He also enjoyed golfing, skiing, running, traveling, and cheering on the Seattle Storm.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tacoma Community House.

Bob's life was a testament to faith, service, and love for others. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, parishioners, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
